When the 54 voting members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame meet today they will be tasked with selecting 5 inductees for the class of 2014. There are 25 nominees to choose from including Jerry Cook, 1969 winner of the Utica-Rome Speedway Championship. Jerry will always be remembered for his rivalry with current Hall of Fame member the late Richie Evans of Rome.There are some other familiar names among those nominated.
Rome's Richie Evans the winningest Modified driver of all time was posthumously inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame Friday night. Joining Evans in the class of 2012 were drivers Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, crew chief Dale Inman and owner Glen Wood. According to USA Today the induction ceremony Friday night was a mixture of remembrance and good humor. Richie's widow Lynn accepted the induction for Richie.
The Utica Rome Speedway will celebrate its 50th anniversary tomorrow night, August 17, with a rare mid-week program of exciting events and races. The speedway opened in 1961 and has hosted a number of legendary drivers over the years including the late Richie Evans, Jerry Cook, Geoff Bodine, Lou Lazzaro and Dale Planck among others. The August 17th bash will feature a number of highlights.
