He was 82.

According to USA Today, Armstrong had undergone heart surgery Aug. 8, three days after his 82nd birthday. His family said Armstrong passed away from post-surgery complications.

The following day, July 21, Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module and became the first man to actually walk on the surface of the moon.
