On this day in 1970, the number one country song was "Sunday Morning Coming Down", by Johnny Cash. The song was written by Johnny's friend and "Highwaymen" colleague, Kris Kristofferson and was a big pop hit as well. We're featuring it today on the "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m. (It's one of my favorite Johnny Cash hits).

In my opinion, any time we feature Johnny Cash on our "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m., it's an event. Today we kick off with "Sunday Morning Coming Down", a song written by Kris Kristofferson and recorded by Johnny Cash on this day in 1970. It went to number one later that year.

One of the most successful singer/songwriters in both country and pop music is Kris Kristofferson, and today is his 76th birthday. We begin today's "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m. with a song he wrote and Sammi Smith recorded, "Help Me Make It Through The Night", which went to number one in 1971. You may remember when he was recording with the Highwaymen (along with friends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings), so we'll feature a song recorded by them as well.
