Elvis Presley is generally known as "The King of Rock and Roll". However early in his career he was just as successful on the country charts as he was on the pop. It was on this date , August 18, of 1956 that Elvis hit the #1 position on the country charts with "Don't Be Cruel" backed with "Hound Dog". The two-sided smash stayed on top for 10 straight weeks making it his 2nd biggest country hit . ("Heartbreak Hotel" was his biggest). Check out this clip from "The Ed Sullivan Show" to see Elvis at the very top of his game.
