I've done the drill many times, and there are two things that always seem to happen: 1. you can't find a parking place closer than 300 yards from the dorm and 2. the dorm elevator is out of service. Here are some helpful suggestions to share with your student before you get there.

And have things changed. When I was in college, those who had enough cash and gas in the VW Bug, would head down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (or Myrtle Beach, South Carolina if the gas money ran out). Not all college students will be dancing and prancing on the beach, as many have part-time jobs or just go home to relax with their families and get that home-cooked food!
