This country has always been a rather fractious, rambunctious and divided place, the result of our enduring freedoms. There are, however a number of things that we American's DO agree on. What on earth could they be?

February 12, 2012 One of my favorite leisure time activities is walking through cemeteries. Many a time I have pulled off the road when I have spotted an old, sometimes forgotten, cemetery and walked among the headstones. By noting the names in a family plot-- their birth and death dates-- you can connect the dots and piece together a history. Sometimes the epitaphs are informative, sometimes amusing (like the one pictured here from the Key West cemetery) but always interesting. My favorite?

Johnny Appleseed who, by the way, was a real person (real name John Chapman) was a well known nurseryman in his time who traveled far and wide promoting and planting apple trees. He was born on this day, September 26, 1774 in Massachusetts.
