Tad and I lent 'Farm Hands' on the Gallagher Farm in Waterville. Actually I lent the hand while Tad took pictures and video. From bottle feeding the calves to milking my first cow, we found out how much work it really takes to run a farm.

Thank you to Paul and Cindy Gallagher for letting us disrupt their morning routine. Cindy taught us the ins and outs of their small farm that is a family affair, with the kids pitching in to do the chores every day. Paul took the time to teach us how they mix the cow feed before showing me how to milk a cow.

Bottle feeding the twin calves, Dipsy and Doodle was also a new experience. Those girls can drink! I even stuck my finger in their mouths and they have some serious sucking power.

Things we learned:

*Cows poop a lot.
*Cows don't give milk until they have a calf.
*Calves don't have all 4 stomachs when born.
*Cows aren't stupid (a Polly quote).
*You can't have a milk barn without a lot of cats.

Thank you to Riverside Diner for providing breakfast. I can't remember being that hungry after a morning of work before.

The Gallagher's received tickets to FrogFest June 13th at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds, presented by White’s Farm Supply and a $50 White’s Farm Supply gift card. They also go into the grand prize drawing for VIP FrogFest tickets and 100 hour rental from White’s Farm Supply. Nominate your farm below.
