Surfing Championships Today in California [VIDEO]

It may be winter here in Central New York and the waves on local lakes may not bring any world class surfers to the area but in Northern California today “The Mavericks Invitational” surfing competition will challenge some of the best board riders in the world. (By the way, that’s my nephew Don in the picture above and, yes, he’s alive). You think it’s easy? Check out these monster wave wipeouts!

How extreme are the conditions for this event. Extremely extreme.
Contest conditions are extreme, with waves in past years as high as 50 feet, strong currents, frigid water and jagged rocks. Co-founder Jeff Clark said the conditions are extremely dangerous, and the surfers put to good use their year-round training regimens. When asked how high the waves from this swell will be, Clark immediately responded “big.”
