Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally This Weekend

Every region has its food specialties. Here in Central New York its chicken riggies, greens and half-moons. In the Southern Tier it’s spiedies and this weekend it’s the annual Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally. The event draws thousands from all over the northeast to Otsiningo Park to sample great food, enjoy balloon rides, listen to music including a concert by Lonestar Sunday at 7, enjoy fireworks displays and much more. What exactly is a spiedie?
“The easiest way to describe it is it’s a shish kabob without vegetables. Te way the history was, it was originally lamb, lamb cut into bite size cubes,” said Lip’s co-owner Sam Lupo.
“A spiedie is basically chunks of marinated meat on a skewer and charbroiled and served on bread. The basic marinade has always been an Italian based marinade, but some people like to put their own concoctions in,” said Rob Salamida, owner of the Rob Salamida Company.
