I know from personal experience that using the self-checkout at the store can save me time. However there have been times when doing so has caused me more aggravation than waiting a few moments for the next cashier. Case in point, when the disembodied computer voice tells me to "re-scan previous item" or "no product code found". Now, according to an article in USA Today, it seems that more and more people are opting for real live people at the checkout. A number of chain stores are actually phasing out their self-checkouts. There are still times when I think the self-checkouts are the better option, like when I want to place my bananas carefully in the bag to avoid bruising. However there are other occasions when I enjoy the personal interaction with a friendly cashier sporting a smile.
