Today's kids, WOW.  They have been saying that about kids since I was one.  Every generation thinks the next leaves a lot to be desired.  Lynette Kay with with Cornell Cooperative Extensions' 4-H Youth Development says there's lots to celebrate with today's youth and the volunteers that make the program possible.

In 4-H we encourage volunteerism throughout the entire year. Civic Responsibility - Community Service is one of the core programs that 4-H uses to inspire youth leadership, provide adult-youth relationships, increase communication opportunities, and teach work force development skills.

4-H itself relies heavily on adult volunteers. During the 2015-16 year, Oneida County had 185 adults volunteering as Leaders, Judges, Project Instructors and Chaperones. Some give an hour, others devote days or weeks to work with youth.

This year, 30% of our youth participated in Community Service. All totaled they gave back a whopping 2,575 hours. That averages to 27 hours per member. Compare that to the national average for teenagers of only 8 hours per individual and you can see how the examples set forth from the adults can greatly influence the activities of youth.

In the spirit of the season we encourage everyone to get out and give back to their community. If you are interested in learning how you can work with 4-H Youth please contact the office at 315-736-3394 ext. 105.
