Life has been cut short for a Rome Free Academy grad who just started at SUNY Broome. Miranda Gifford was killed in a car crash.

Gifford veered across her lane and into oncoming traffic, where she struck a service truck, according to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office. The crash that occurred around noon Monday, October 30th closed South Canal Street in the Village of Oxford for about 4 hours.

Gifford had to be extricated from her vehicle and airlifted to University Hospital in Syracuse where she died from her injuries Wednesday, November 1st.

Gifford was a freshman at SUNY Broome, majoring in Homeland Security and participated on both the Hornets softball and basketball teams, according to SUNY Broome. Counseling is available at the school.

Danny Hall and his passenger in the truck were uninjured.

Funeral arrangements for Gifford have not been announced yet.
