It's no surprise, but a Long Island village is the wealthiest place here in New York State.Hewlett Bay Park on the South Shore is first when it comes to the annual income per person living in that community.  The average person who lives in Hewlett Bay Park earns over $113,000 per year.   That's based on U.S. Census data for personal income per year.

The poorest town in the state is a village called Kiyas Joel, located in Orange Country.   The average person in that small town near the Pennsylvania border earns under $5,000 per year.  According to the Census Bureau, that village also has the highest poverty rate in the entire nation.

As far as Central New York is concerned,  Fayetteville, Cooperstown and New Hartford lead the cities, towns and villages when it comes to personal income.  The lowest incomes in this area belong to people who live in Morrisville, Remsen, Oneonta, Frankfort and Ilion.
