Derick Brassard smashed home a rebound just 28 seconds into the opening period to push the Rangers off to a fast start in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with Penguins.

Later in the period, captain Ryan McDonagh lit the lamp and New York had all the goals it would need to take a 1-0 series lead. Pittsburgh pulled to within 2-1 in the second period after Blake Comeau found the back of the net but the Rangers were able to stave off the Pens' offense in the third.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced.

Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at MSG.
