Many moons ago when I first moved to New York, I remember being impressed with the number of large pumpkins grown throughout CNY and Upstate.  In fact, it's not unusual for record breaking pumpkins and sunflowers to come from our area.   Cornell Cooperative Extension and Gardeners of America are holding a contest for both involving youth up to 18 years of age.

Applications can be obtained on the Gardeners of Rome facebook page, the CCE Oneida County website or by calling the 4-H office at 315-736-3394 ext 105. By participating in the program youth agree to bring their pumpkin/sunflower to the weigh in at Ace Hardware in Rome on October 1st. Winners can go on to the National Event.

Don’t know anything about growing pumpkins or sunflowers! No need to worry Members of the are available to assist the youth with any problems or questions they may have.

Pumpkins and sunflowers are tender plants and should not be set outside until all danger of frost has passed. In this area most people plant Memorial Day weekend.

You can get an extra start by planting your seeds indoors and then transplanting when the weather is warm enough.

Planting time is just around the corner. Call soon to get your seeds.
