A frightening sickness, described as worse than Lyme disease, has been found in several ticks in Connecticut. The illness is call Powassan virus and has been found in ticks around Bridgeport, Connecticut.

CBS New York reports that though the Powassan virus is rare, is can be an extremely serious condition

“The doctor just has to support you during the acute illness and hope that you survive,” Dr. Daniel Cameron explained.
Dr. Cameron is the President of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. He said that if bitten by an infected tick you can get the virus within a matter of minutes, and while the symptoms are similar to Lyme disease, they are more severe.

Bridgeport, in southern Connecticut, is about 20 miles, as the crow flies, to the New York border and Westchester County's Pound Ridge.

Powassan virus is named after a town in Ontario where it was first identified, similar to how Lyme disease bears the name of Lyme, Connecticut.
