Will the Pitcher Street Post Office in Utica Be Shut Down?

Senator Chuck Schumer is urging the Postmaster General of the United States to keep the main Utica Post Office on Pitcher Street open.

According to the Utica Observer-Dispatch, in remarks to the incoming Postmaster, Senator Schumer

said the facility is too important to the Mohawk Valley region and its 100 employees to be shuttered.
“While I recognize the importance of making cost-saving reforms in order to preserve the Post Office’s vital services, closing the Pitcher Street Post Office would be a major blow to the community and to the facility’s 100 employees,” Schumer said.
Back in 2012, some functions of the Pitcher Street facility were transferred to Syracuse, part of a nationwide consolidation by the Postal Service.

While the Pitcher Street location is considered Utica's main Post Office, the city is also served by Butterfield Station downtown at Lafayette and Senca Streets and Kernan Station on Genesee Street in South Utica.
