Parents Ask School Not To Assign Homework During Vacations

We are always hearing about how the U.S is falling behind in education and that other countries are lengthening their school days and school years. Yet a group of parents in New Paltz, New York is petitioning school officials to refrain from assigning homework during school year vacations.
The New Paltz Times Herald-Record reports that a group of some 50 parents have started an online petition to request that no homework be given to students over a school year break as it is–in their words–too stressful and the kids need a break.
“Some of us like homework for our kids, some of us don’t,” the petition reads. “But we all agree that homework assignments at the Middle School and High School (including AP classes) must not be given over breaks and holidays.”

No word yet on what if any the effect of the petition will have on educators but I can say–as a former student–that I think school days are for study and vacation days are for fun.
