He's done it all, seen it all, played it all... from country to pop and a few American standards thrown in, Willie Nelson is one of those performers who appeals to just about everybody. He's even sung duets with Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Jimmy Sturr's Polka band. Today, Willie celebrates his 79th birthday and is still going strong. That's good enough reason for me to feature him and his music on today's "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m.
On this day in 1991, "Rockin' Years" by Dolly Parton and Ricky Van Shelton was number one on the country charts. Today, we begin our "Country Classic Double" with that song, and continue the duets theme with "Meet Me In Montana", a number one hit from 1985 featuring Marie Osmond and the late Dan Seals.
On today's "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m. we're featuring country re-dos of pop hits. One of the biggest was "Stand By Me", which hit number one on the country charts when Mickey Gilley recorded it in 1980. It was originally a pop hit for Ben E. King in 1961, and Mickey's version was also featured in the the John Travolta motion picture, "Urban Cowboy".
Today we kick off our "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m. with a classic duet, Kenny Rogers and Dottie West singing, "All I Ever Need Is You". That was the number one song this day back in 1979, and before that it was a huge pop hit for Sonny & Cher. And, check out another story here on Kenny's thoughts on his hit "The Gambler".
We've heard about the city of Utica's financial problems these days, and Boilermaker Road Race officials are stepping up to the plate to help finance additional police for the July 8th race.
We're going way back today on our "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m. with Ferlin Husky and his number one song this week in 1957, "Gone". We follow it up with Don Gibson's number one on this day in 1958, "Oh Lonesome Me" (talk about classics)!
Today, we begin our "Country Classic Double" with Willie Nelson and his number one country hit in 1982 "Always On My Mind". On this day back in 1982, the song entered the Top 40 Chart, where it peeked at number five.
One of the "Outlaws" of country music is celebrating his 75th birthday today...Merle Haggard. We'll kick off this morning's "Country Classic Double" at 11:30 a.m. with Merle's number one song from 1968, "Mama Tried".
Earlier, we learned that the Utica Boilermaker Road Race 15k slots were all filled. Today, according to press@boilermaker.com, the 5k hit its race cap of 4,000 registrants. As Race Director Jim Stasaitis said, "Last year at this time, we had 59 runners signed up."
