One Wives Tale Says Heavy Snow Coming Soon
Do you think we are in for a snowy winter? Some of the Old’ Wive’s Tales signs are saying it could be a heavy year and the flakes could be coming soon. Although the Old Farmer’s Almanac says we’re in for a cold but dry winter, some signs indicate something very different.

My grandfather was a huge believer in the “signs” when it came to predicting the weather or when the fish would be biting. One of the weather signs was the wooly worm or caterpillar as it is more commonly known. I saw my first one today, and he/she looked pretty “wooly.” According to the theory, a heavy coat means heavy snow. Also it has 2 black bands. The first would indicate snow coming soon, then a break through the middle of the winter, with more snow at the end.

The fruit of a Persimmon Tree was another sign. Split the fruit in half, if it’s shaped like a shovel more heavy snow.
Do you know of some common weather signs around Central New York, like it can’t snow until the Utica Swamp is full? Here’s a place where you can find more weather signs.
