Oil Spill Fouls Mohawk River At Schenectady

First discovered by a rowing team at Union College, the State Department of Environmental Conservation is working to clean up an oil spill on the Mohawk River in Schenectady.

No one knows how the spill was caused or how long it's been there. The oil slick is about the size of a football field and the Daily Gazette reported,

It was not clear where the oil came from, but there was enough to stretch across the river on Monday night, and still more was being blown against the bank Tuesday morning. Garver emphasized that there’s not enough information yet to know how the oil got onto the river.

“We have to figure out: is it one gallon someone chucked off a boat, or is it a million gallons with a source we have to contain?”

The site is near where the River Casino and Resort at Mohawk Harbor is set to be built.
