Inmates in New York State are getting free tablets. The new initiative comes at no cost to the state or taxpayers.

The free tablets will allow inmates to access free educational material and eBooks. They can also use it to file grievances but the tablets won't have internet access. Inmates will however be allowed to buy music, additional eBooks and use a secure email system to talk with family and friends.

Acting DOCCS Commissioner Anthony Annucci made the announcement at a Budget hearing in Albany. No state money will be used for what Annucci calls a 'groundbreaking move." JPay, the company that allows families and friends to deposit money for inmates, is providing the tablets for free.

Tablets will be provided to more than 50,000 inmates in 54 prisons across New York State.
