You may not be too happy if you're a young, avid smoker in New York.

Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation to raise the legal smoking age for cigarettes and vaping products from 18 to 21. He posted on his Facebook page about the decision.

By raising the smoking age to 21, we can help prevent an entire generation of New Yorkers from forming costly and potentially deadly addictions.

Some New Yorkers, including Maria Mirabella, voiced their support for the new legislation by sharing personal stories in the post's comments.

I don't know if it will work but if it can save one kid from getting cancer or emphysema I'm all for it. Wouldn't mind it being totally illegal. Yes, I was a smoker and so were many of my deceased relatives who passed from emphysema.

Others, like Scott Gregory, voiced concerns in the post's comments about what legal adults should be able to do within their own rights.

But our country will allow a person at the age of eighteen to carry a weapon, operate devices of destruction and die in the line of duty. If the adult age is eighteen [then] give them the rights of an adult at eighteen.

According to New York Daily News, the law will go into effect 120 days after it was signed, so we're looking to see the age increase sometime in mid-November.
