To legally obtain a New York hunting license for the first time you'll need to meet 2 requirements, minimum age of 12 and pass a Hunter Education Course. Passing the course may not be as challenging as finding a class with open registration.

Passing an Education Course is required for firearm or archery when hunting big or small game, turkey, and waterfowl. While you have to be 12 to obtain a license, you can actually take the course when age 11. To take the course, anyone under 16 must provide a parental permission slip. And women only classes are available.

Classes are predominantly held between March and September and you will be required to complete some homework ahead of classroom instruction. Registering for a course can be done online, but work plenty ahead of any planned hunting trip. It may be a couple of weeks before you'll find a class that has openings close to home.

Get a complete list of Hunter Safety Courses at the DEC website.  There are two sessions of classes for women only in Hamlin On July 26 and 28.
