Most Shoppers Make Impulse Purchases

How many times have you gone to the store to pick up a specific item only to walk out with a bag or shopping cart full of things you hadn’t intended to buy? According to a new survey by MarketWatch.com 9 out of 10 shoppers will do exactly that. What are the reasons behind such impulse buying?
Shoppers who purchase off-list items, 66 percent say the reason was a sale or promotion, 30 percent say they found a coupon, and 23 percent say they simply wanted to pamper themselves.
“Our data shows that 61 percent of off-list shoppers purchase an additional 1-3 items,” said Craig Elston, senior vice president, Integer(TM). “This shows that if you reach a particular shopper at the right moment with the right message, for example–using in-store signage to play into their desire to pamper themselves– it can end with that item being added to their basket.”

There was no male-female breakdown behind these numbers but if I had to guess I would say that women tend to make more impulse purchases than men as we guys tend to go on a mission to get a specific item whereas women like to “shop”.
