It’s been a tough year for Miranda Lambert, splitting from her husband Blake Shelton this summer, and until recently she’s kept quiet about how she’s been coping. In the upcoming issue of Cosmopolitan, however, Lambert opens up, and she wants country fans to know that picking sides isn’t the way to support the stars through this painful experience.

"We are real people with real lives and real sh--. We’re both very honest. This is what it is now, and we’re moving forward. We don’t need all the opinions. We just need y’all to be supportive, and nobody pick a side — because there ain’t a side,” she tells the magazine bluntly.

Lambert also seems to have let go of any anger she may have felt toward Shelton, still complimenting his character when describing what it’s like to be moving on.

"I had a great relationship with an amazing man,” she says. "So I know what good is. I have a great launching pad for the future. I will never take that for granted."

Lambert is taking the process one day at a time and trying to take care of herself, which she says sometimes “might mean nights on my porch crying, drinking whiskey, and going, ‘Man, this sucks right now.'”

The star has handled the situation with grace, even when attending the CMA Awards with Shelton in the audience on the day that he and singer Gwen Stefani confirmed their relationship. Lambert won Female Vocalist of the Year for the sixth consecutive year at the 2015 CMAs, accepting her trophy with a genuine heartfelt speech, noting that she “needed a bright spot this year.” She also performed “Bathroom Sink” from her record Platinum, which released in 2014 and was nominated for Entertainer of the Year — the only female in the category. Lambert is slated to head out with Kenny Chesney on his stadium tour next year.
