Michael Phelps is a bonafide star. In addition to being one of the best athletes in history and the United States’ crown jewel at the Olympic games, the world’s greatest swimmer is also humble, funny, sweet and a just a joy to watch in those post-competition interviews. With his retirement from professional competition pending (if you had as many gold medals as him, you’d consider giving a rest, too), Phelps plans to stay in the spotlight, but in a completely different capacity. How’s the Golf Channel sound?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Phelps is set to appear on the next season of the Golf Channel’s ‘The Haney Project,’ which follows legendary golf coach Hank Haney as he attempts to transform celebrities into golf pros (previous seasons have spotlighted Charles Barkley, Ray Romano and Adam Levine). For those that wonder why Haney is a big deal to fans of the sport, just know that he used to coach a certain golfer named Tiger Woods.

Here’s what Phelps has to say about his new job as a reality TV star:

“As I enter this next chapter of my life, I think I will be able to shift my competitiveness to anything I put my mind to…And golf is one of the things I want to focus on. … I want to play all the world’s great golf courses, but I’d like to play them well.”

Since there’s no way Phelps is as good at golf as he is at traversing a swimming pool, it should be fun to watch one of the world’s greatest athletes struggle with a sport. Although this would normally qualify as good old fashioned schadenfreude viewing, Phelps is such a likable guy that I’m sure he’ll have us cheering him on in no time flat.
