Merle Haggard Likes Today’s Country

There are plenty of critics around saying that country music isn’t what it used to be but Merle Haggard isn’t one of them. The Boot reported that Merle recently told the Corpus Christi Caller that while he is not particularly fond of the pop oriented direction that the music has taken he is seeing some positive signs in the songwriting.
“Lately I’ve noticed an improvement in the overall quality of songs and what not,” Haggard said. “There have been some pretty neat things. I’d love to hear a Johnny Cash come to town, somebody who absolutely defies what’s going on and takes you in another direction. I think that’s what we need to see. I’m hoping for it. Nobody’s been playing different. That hasn’t happened. That’s what I look for.”

Among the artists Merle says he looks to as future hopefuls are Hunter Hayes, Jamey Johnson and Willie Nelson’s son Lukas.
