Katie Spotz is a person that understands the power of a promise.  Among her many accomplishment's are; rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean, running across the US not once, but twice and Swimming the Allegheny River.  She is also part of the Because I Said I Would movement. The Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program is bringing her to Utica for a free community event.

YSLPP is a combined effort of Utica City Schools and Utica College to help students who show great promise but are hampered by a social or economic barrier.  Spotz will be the keynote speaker at the group's annual "Grow Big Dreams" dinner on Tuesday, March 28.

Executive Director, Pam Matt says following the dinner, she will also speak at a "free community event" in the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center at Utica College.  "Among her topics will be the power of commitment and keeping your promises."  She thinks Spotz will be "Absolutely wonderful for the scholars' program.  And she wanted to share her inspirational story to any and all that will attend."

The Scholars program is in it's 24th year and has had a great track record.  Matt says last year's program had "350 students with a 100% graduation rate, 5 of the top 10 students in the school system as well as the valedictorian." You can learn more about the program as well as the dinner and event at Utica College's website.
