Matt’s 25 Years of Big Frog Memories (Part 2)

As we approach Big Frog 104′s (Jumpin Country 96 Frog) silver (25th) anniversary on Friday I have been thinking about some of the more memorable moments I have experienced. As you can see in the photo both Jeremiah B. Frog and I have changed over the years but the great memories we have are as fresh as ever. Here are a few more gleaned from my 25 years at Big Frog 104.
Keith Urban at the Turning Stone–It was early on in his career that we had Keith Urban appear at one of our listener appreciation party’s at the Turning Stone. It was just Keith and his guitar but he made that instrument sound like a 6-piece band, an incredible player. He gave us an early glimpse at why he would become a superstar.
April Fool’s!–I can’t recall exactly what year it was–early 90′s sometime–when we decided to play an April Fool’s trick on Central New York. We announced that we were changing our name from Big Frog 104 to Big Cow 104 in honor of the local farming community. I became “Hugh Heifer” and Cricket became “Elsie”. Other air staff members adopted similar bovine oriented handles. Listeners went crazy! We got more phone calls from upset listeners than you can imagine but it was fun–for a day.
September 12, 2001–It was the day after the terrorist attacks and my then partner, Bullfrog, and I knew we couldn’t just do another show. We opened up the phone lines and let everyone who wished to speak, in anger or in grief, go on the air with us. It was a day we will never forget and a true bonding experience with the Big Frog 104 listening family.
