Every school day for the past 19 years Mary Ann Jordan of New Hartford has woke up, put on her vest, and walked down to the corner of Sanger Ave. and Pearl St. to make sure students walking to school did it safely. Her reason is simple. She loves kids.Although many people in the community appreciate the work guards like Mary Ann put in to ensure the safety of children, we felt they deserved just a little more recognition.

Chief Michael Inserra of the New Hartford Police Department says that he is very proud of the work that the crossing guards do. Not only do they wake up early and stand out in all weather conditions, they are also a valuable source of information for police. In essence they are a watchful eye. Kids that interact with crossing guards such as Mary Ann tend to develop a relationship and trust with that person. He says, "I've never had one person complain about standing out on their post." The next time you see a crossing guard, roll down your window and shout out a big "thank you" or give them a thumbs up.
