You have probably heard about the importance of agricultural districts in protecting farm land, decreasing taxes and changing some environmental laws.  Madison County is holding an open enrollment period and Oneida Country is in the midst of reviewing districts.  Here's details on ag districts and how to enroll.

Agricultural Districts not only help preserve the agricultural industry, but also preserve open space and rural character.  The Agriculture & Markets Law Article 25AA is based on a combination of landowner incentives and protections, all of which are designed to forestall the conversion of farmland to non-agricultural uses.

October has been designated as Madison County's "open enrollment" period during which properties can be added to an existing agricultural district.  To get more details on enrolling your farm, you can contact Madison County Planning Department by calling 315 366-2376 and asking for a Survey Form or go online to download the forms. Each Survey Form requires the Tax parcel ID number and acreage of the property and a description of the land must be included with the request.

The Oneida County Farmland Protection Board is currently doing an eight year review for Agriculture District 6 consisting of the Towns of Bridgewater, Marshall, Paris and Sangerfield.  For an application or more information, contact Guy Sassaman, Oneida County Planning Department, at 315-798-5710 or email gsassaman@ocgov.net. Applications can also be picked up at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, 121 Second Street in Oriskany or call 736-3394 ext. 111.  Get more details on New York's Agricultural Districts, CNY maps and Frequently Asked Questions.
