July 1, 1956; Elvis Serenades A Hound Dog [VIDEO]

It was 1956 and Elvis Presley was the hottest new singer in America. His combination of country, blues and rock and roll along with an expressive way of presenting it on stage had captivated a nation. TV host Steve Allen was not a fan. After signing Elvis to appear on his highly rated show he insisted that Elvis not only tone down his presentation but perform his new song “Hound Dog” in a most unusual manner.
Elvis was presented wearing formal attire. His body movements were subdued. He sang ‘Hound Dog’ to a live basset hound. Through the years, much has been written and said about this appearance. The thrust of the historical record is that Elvis was being demeaned by Allen, and that he resented the treatment for the rest of his life.
