Texas Country artist Josh Ward was involved in a boat wreck on Lake Conroe, just north of Houston, Texas, on Tuesday night (July 1) which proved to be fatal for some of the patrons in the other boat.

According to local police, Ward’s bass boat was returning from a fishing tournament at about 9PM local time when it rounded a corner and struck a pleasure boat. Four adults and four children were in the pleasure boat, which was also moving. Only one other person was in the bass boat.

Police say alcohol was not a factor. Ward and the 43-year-old driver report that the pleasure boat was operating without its lights on and they didn’t see it until it was too late. A 30-year-old woman and young boy died from injuries. One passenger from the pleasure boat is still missing, while several others were injured.

After being taken to the hospital, Ward updated fans on his condition on Facebook. On Wednesday afternoon, he deflected attention to the families of those who lost loved ones:

At this moment I ask everyone to keep the victims and the families of the people involved in this tragic accident in your thoughts and prayers. My injuries will heal and my life will continue. Unfortunately, there are others that weren’t as lucky. The focus needs to be on them. I do not want my involvement in this to take the emphasis off of those that are suffering a great deal more than myself. Please hold your children, family, and friends as close as possible and remember that things can change in one instant. Thank you again for your support.

KHOU in Houston reports that Ward was not driving the boat at the time. The bass boat struck and passed over the other boat, causing all parties to be ejected from their watercraft. Ward and his fishing partner reportedly swam back to try to help those in the water. Police say not all passengers were wearing life jackets.

A fractured elbow will keep Ward from performing this weekend.
