Increased Yogurt Production Good News For Upstate Farmers

The popularity of yogurt is proving to be a boom to upstate New York dairy farmers. With New Berlin based Agro Farma, makers of America’s best selling yogurt Chobani, having already announced plant expansion plans and Johnstown’s Fage USA–another yogurt maker–expanding its facilities the demand for milk from upstate farmers is bound to increase. The Little Falls Times reports that even more yogurt making production might be in the offing.
PepsiCo Inc., also might be looking to construct a yogurt plant in Batavia, though the company would not confirm it.
With possibly three yogurt plants in upstate New York, farmers would need to increase production 15 percent more, said Matt Nelligan, manager of public affairs for the New York State Farm Bureau.

Upstate New York has suffered a number of economic blows over the past several years but with these developments at least a section of our agricultural economy will be enjoying a renaissance.
