Today we honor what may have truly been the 1st profession, farming. It's National Agriculture Day and just like New York is more than a city, land in the state is more than cities, parks and mountains.  About 23% of the state's acreage is used in farming.

According to the USDA's Farm Service Agency, there are 35,537 agricultural operations in the Empire State and we're among the top states for dairy, apples, grapes and corn for silage, having a market value of $5.4 billion. The New York State Agriculture Society shares the top crops in the state and where they rank on a national level:

#2 Apples, Maple Syrup, and Pumpkins
#3 Dairy, Wine & Grapes, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Corn Silage
#4 Tart cherries, fresh market Sweet Corn, Squash, Pears
#5 Fresh market vegetables, Onions
#7 Cucumbers, Floriculture crops
#8 Strawberries
#9 Oats
