What is more American than celebrating Independence Day with some good, old-fashioned fireworks? Let's face it - it is a right of passage to launch those beautiful colors in the sky, and it is oh so fun!

However; while they may be exciting, fun, and beautiful, there are a few safety measures to keep in mind. Now that Fireworks are semi-legal in New York, it's important to know and take the proper precautions to keep you and your family safe!

    Attend Professional Displays

The first and most obvious of safety precautions is to simply attend a public display of fireworks. These are conducted by trained professionals who can quickly and properly respond and react in case of an emergency situation.

    The Spark of Sparklers

Who doesn't love to celebrate the 4th of July with a sparkler or two? I know that I sure do! These are especially intriguing to children, but if not handled properly, they can be very dangerous. Teach children to use caution when holding the sparklers. Hold them at a far enough distance and never pick up left over sparklers (they may still be active).

    Always Wear Fitted Clothes

If you are choosing to have your own firework display at your home, or if you are simply using sparklers, make sure to always wear fitted clothing. Loose clothing can easily ignite.

    Water & Safety Glasses

Always have a bucket of water on hand, just in case sparks start flying, and to drench the sparklers/fireworks before discarding them in order to prevent trash fires. Wearing safety glasses is also extremely important. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 19% of injuries occur in the eyes causing serious burns.
