The same crisis that devastated the water infrastructure in Flint, MI has already begun in Upstate, NY. Hoosick Falls is a little town in the Capitol region and their water source, in some instances, has been deemed unsafe. How serious is this situation?

According to a report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),

In 2015, members of the Hoosick Falls community have contacted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with concerns and questions about whether they should drink, bathe in, or cook with their water, which has been found to contain perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

This type of acid is used in many cleaning products and fire-fighting tools. It is most definitely toxic to human contact. Where the problem in Michigan is mainly lead, which is a problem everywhere, this contamination Upstate is related to man-made products used everyday, indoors and out.

What is being done? The EPA is keeping the community informed on the latest information as it is discovered. If anyone in that area has any questions, they can contact a representative at Romanowski.Larisa@epa.gov or 518-407-0400. Let's hope they can get a handle on this situation before things get out of control.
