How Many High School Sweethearts Marry?

My wife and I bowl with a couple who have been together since high school, almost 30 years all told. While I admire them for their commitment I have to wonder how common their situation is, what with the obstacles thrown in the path of high school grads such as going off to college and relocation. I did a little homework and found out that though no definitive statistics are available the number of high school sweethearts who marry is surprisingly small.The numbers I came across ranged from a high of just under 10% to a low of 2% and I have to believe that the percentage has dropped over the course of the last 2 or 3 generations. One can understand that although that first blush of teenage romance can be overwhelming most people go through enormous changes in their 20′s and 30′s which make it difficult to keep that initial romantic rush alive. So my hat is off to all of you “high school sweethearts” who made it from “going steady” to “going down the aisle”!
