Hoppy Birthday George Strait.  The Texas native turns 59 today.  He was born in Poteet Texas and raised in Pearsall.  George taught himself to play the guitar while in the US Army in 1971.  He graduated from Southwest Texas State with a degree in agriculture.

He released his first song "Unwound" in 1981.  It rose to #6 on the country music charts.

George Strait's first #1 song, of many, came the following year with "Fool Hearted Memory," from the movie "The Soldier."

It wasn't until 1990, George scored a #1  hit with "Love Without End, Amen."  The song stayed at the top of the charts for 5 weeks.

George even tried his hand at acting in 1992 in the movie "Pure Country."  His song "I Cross My Heart" also went to #1 for two weeks.  Although the song was great, I'm glad he stuck to music.  His acting left a lot to be desired and my mamma always taught me to stick with what you do best.

I admit, I wasn't a country fan until the early 90's, but I fell in love with "Ocean Front Property."  It was probably one of the first country albums I had.  A co-worker knew how much I loved the song and bought me a CD with it on it.  I still have it today.  Although I enjoy the new sound of country, I still love a little traditional mixed in.  And George Strait is the epitome of traditional country.
