Google just launched an update that includes a new 3D view of Google Earth and it looks really cool. We decided to test it out by looking at a few areas of Utica.

The picture above is of the Utica Marshlands and the whole thing looks really strange, and kind of like a late 1990's video game. Remember when games were very block-y and landscapes were stretched-out looking?

Here's Downtown Utica

This one looks a lot better. You can see the Utica Aud, Genesee Street, and other features like the golden dome. And this view of Utica looks really cool in 3D.

Now let's focus in on Bagg's Square

With even more detail, you're able to see the train station, children's museum and the Harbor Point. While this looks slightly like a comic book illustration, the detail you can pick out is way better than the old Google Earth 2D view.

Now on to Utica College

Being a Utica College Alum, I have to say I love this view of UC.

Now how about a look at the Brewery district in 3D

It's amazing to see Varick Street and the F.X. Matt Brewery like this. Normally, you'd see just the top down view, but now you can get a good look at the size difference between buildings.

You also get a good look at the layout of the area and the brewery. Did you realize it was that big?

The program is still as simple as visiting Google.com/earth and clicking on the '3D' option on the menu on the bottom left of the screen.

The update also has a new feature called 'Voyager' that lets you experience other people's interactive stories from around the world.

Just don't blame us if you find yourself playing on Google Earth for even longer now that 3D is here.
