We can all breathe a sigh of relief as the standoff in Herkimer comes to a close.  State Police say they have shot Kurt Myers, who killed 4 people and injured two more yesterday.  Myers was found in the basement of the building, apparently waiting for police.  He shot and killed a FBI K-9 before being shot by police.

State Police have released this preliminary statement:

State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico, representatives for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and for the Herkimer and Mohawk Police Departments will be holding a press conference at 10:00 a.m. to give updates about the shootings in the Villages of Herkimer and Mohawk, New York, which happened early yesterday.

Governor Cuomo released the following statement following the end of the standoff:

'This morning law enforcement officials entered the building and, after being fired upon, shot and killed the suspect, Kurt Myers. There were no injuries to law enforcement officials, though an FBI police dog was fatally shot. We commend the courage and extraordinary efforts of the state police, the FBI, and local law enforcement officials in finding the suspect and ending this horrific spree of violence and bloodshed. It is now time for mourning those who we lost in this senseless act of violence. In the darkest of times, the bravery, kindness, and the spirit of community of New Yorkers shines the brightest, and that is what we saw yesterday in Herkimer and Mohawk as the community came together during this difficult time. The thoughts and prayers of my family and of all New Yorkers are with the friends and loved ones of the victims.'

A round of applause to the police and emergency personnel on the scene.  This terrible situation could have ended with more bloodshed than it did.  Their quick response and careful planning put an end to a tragedy the Mohawk Valley won't soon forget.
