The Department of Environmental Conservation will stock more than two-and-a-quarter million trout this year. With more than 315 lakes and ponds, plus over 28-hundred miles of rivers and streams, knowing when and where they're stocking is the key to catching your limit.

Stocking takes place in April, May, and June with weather obviously playing a role. The northern part of Central New York and the North Country are usually clinging to winter and get their trout later in the season. For instance, the Black River in Boonville is stocked between May and June, while Canda Creek in Rome is stocked in April.

The DEC's website lists the planned stocking dates by county. Info also includes the average size and type of trout. There's also a searchable database that allows you to search by a body of water, town, type and size of fish, and date.
