Herb Hyer is a man who gave 16 and a half years of service to the U.S Navy and now can barely walk.  He was injured on a ship and nearly severed his spine.  Doctors told him, he'd never walk again, but with the help of his cane and his dog, he manages.  He also has an electric wheelchair but has a difficult time getting in and out of his home.

Rebuilding Together is a organization that has been around our area for over 16 years, and helps people remain in their homes.  And since April 30th was national rebuilding day, a number of volunteers gathered at Hyer's home in Ilion to build him a new wheelchair ramp and spruce up his yard.  And each volunteer had a different reason for pitching in.  One woman was paying it forward.  Two young girls helped  her after her home in Utica was spray painted and vandalized several times.  Another woman just felt it was the right thing to do.

If a man can put himself in the line of fire more times than he count, I figure it's the least we can do.

What a great cause.  To learn more about this organization visit Rebuilding Together, or to volunteer go to where volunteering begins at Volunteer Match
