‘Hee Haw’ Is Broadway Bound
Kornfield Kounty is getting a musical makeover and heading to the Big Apple!
'Hee Haw,' the classic television variety show known for its country music, corn pone humor, rural Southern culture and hilarious sketches, is being crafted into 'Hee Haw: the Musical,' the New York Post reports.
However, it won't be a compilation of the well-known songs and familiar skits. Instead, 'Hee Haw: the Musical' is being turned into a storyline about a woman from Kornfield Kounty and her boyfriend. Although they are destined to be married, she wants to first see the world.
Fans of the TV show will be glad to know that several of the original characters are due to appear in the musical, including Grandpa Jones, Misty Rowe, Lulu Roman and Junior Samples. The masterminds behind the musical make up a first-rate team. Steve Buchanan, head of Opry Entertainment Group, is putting the show together, and the script is by Robert Horn, who wrote the musical '13.'
Obviously, the big star of the show will be the music and lyrics, penned by some of country music's greatest songwriters including Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark, the geniuses behind Miranda Lambert's 'Mama's Broken Heart,' the Band Perry's 'Better Dig Two' and Kacey Musgraves' 'Merry Go 'Round.'
An insider says the music is comprised of several “tear-your-heart-out country ballads" and "some hilarious songs in the style of those wonderful and terrible ‘Hee Haw’ jokes in the cornfield.”
'Hee Haw' aired on CBS from 1969 - 1971 before an impressive 20-year run in local syndication, and now fans can experience it on the Great White Way. The musical is expected to open on Broadway in the spring of 2015.
