Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed

youtube

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. So goes the old saying and whether or not it is true it’s not such a bad idea. Johnny Appleseed who, by the way, was a real person (real name John Chapman) was a well known nurseryman in his time who traveled far and wide promoting and planting apple trees. He was born on this day, September 26, 1774 in Massachusetts. He died in 1844 at the age of 70 but his legend lived on and he was honored with a postage stamp by the U.S. Postal Service in 1966. By the way, we grow absolutely delicious apples right here in Central New York. More info about New York State apples can be found here.
