Even if you have brown fingers, you can grow your own herbs.  You can grow them in a garden, in beds or in containers.  The Master Gardener program at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County has the "how-to's."
In addition to being easy to grow, herbs have a wide variety of uses.  You can choose; "culinary herbs, herbs for crafts, herbs for teas, medicinal herbs, herbs to attract pollinators to your gardens."
For most herbs, all you need is a spot that has about six hours of sunlight and well-drained soil.  If planting herbs in the garden, the best soil is average garden soil with compost added to improve drainage and texture.   The ideal pH range for most herbs is pH 6.5 to 7.0, slightly acidic to neutral.
After deciding on where and what herbs you want to grow, you can start your own seeds or purchase plants from your local garden center.  The Master Gardeners even have tips on starting your own seeds.
