As a life-long resident of the Utica-Rome area, I recognize the importance of the Griffiss Airport facilities in Rome to the local community. Now thanks to federal funds, Griffiss will get an upgrade.

According to our sister station, WIBX:

"The Federal Aviation Administration will re-admit Griffiss International Airport into the Military Airport Program with a grant of $270,000.

That announcement comes from Senators Charles Schumer and Kirtsen Gillibrand.

The MAP funding will be used to renovate hangars at the airport and make them more energy efficient.

Griffiss will also receive a second federal grant worth over $475,000 from the Department of Transportation to help plan long-term upgrades to the airport."
