George Jones Hits the Charts For First Time On This Day In 1955

George Jones defines the word “optimist”. Having recently (September 12) celebrated his 80th birthday “The Possum” announced an ambitious 2012 tour schedule encompassing some 45 shows. While George continues to look forward we are reminded of just how long he has been a part of the country music scene as today, October 29th, is the 56th anniversary of his first song to hit the charts, “Why Baby Why”. While we weren’t able to unearth a performance of the song featuring George In his “flat-top” days I hope you enjoy this version of that classic song.
Over the years the song has also proved successful for other artists including Red Sovine and Webb Pierce (1956) and Charlie Pride (1983).
