FDA Reviewing The Recall Of Chobani Yogurt After Mold Problem

Luke Tubia, WIBX

The Food and Drug Administration is now reviewing Greek yogurt producer Chobani’s request to pull yogurt from the shelves of stores after the company acknowledged a “mold problem.”

The company has offered statements on its blogs and Facebook page, but has not issued an official recall.  The fact that the company allegedly called stores directly, and did not issue a public recall, is the issue.

In all fifteen flavors were pulled.  Containers of concern bear the code 16-012 with expiration dates ranging from 09/11/2013 through 10/07/2013.  Consumers have commented that the packages Swell” or “bulge” and affected product “fizzles” or “tastes like alcohol.”

A statement on the company’s “Promise to You” blog on September 3, 2013 reads as follows:

“Update as of 9/3/13 6PM:

Our thorough investigation has identified a type of mold commonly found in the dairy environment. The product in question is less than 5% of our production and is limited to products produced at our Idaho facility, which accounts for only one third of our production capacity.”

The product was pulled as a precaution.

Since its founding in 2005 Chobani has rapidly grown to become one of the most popular brands of Greek yogurt.
